Well, not very much. I can't get it from my work or home LOL. Luckily, there is an online stream. Our college station is freeform, so yes, we all play whatever we want during our respective shows. It really works against you more than for you, though. No one wants to listen to a station that's playing a different kind of format every hour. The guy after me plays weird sounds, no music. I wish I was joking.
Are you actually working and getting paid or just volunteering? Should be fun either way, if you're into Hot AC anyway.
Yeah Three Days Grace and Theory Of A Deadman do great in both places, for whatever reason. Also amazes me that Art Of Dying and Redlight King do better down there than here.

What do you mean by "weird sounds"? ;D Are you actually working and getting paid or just volunteering? Should be fun either way, if you're into Hot AC anyway. Just volunteering, but I'm looking forward to the experience I'll get from it. Hot AC isn't my favorite format these days, but our teacher actually has a pretty good selection of recurrents that will be fun to play. He still plays a lot of Matchbox Twenty, Counting Crows, Goo Goo Dolls and other bands that the "real" Hot ACs around here have been backing away from.

Do stations still really censor Money For Nothing? That's stupid. The whole thing was idiotic. Then again, I can't stand that song. Huh. The quote in my signature is actually from a Dire Straits song. I've only ever heard the un-edited version once on the radio, and that was before the whole fiasco. It amazes me that they don't even give them a shot. I hear songs like "The Stand" by Mother Mother (#3 Alt), "Good Day At The Races" by Hollerado (#7 Alt), and can't imagine them NOT being well received on US alt stations. The same goes for two recent #1s, "Heavyweight" and "Albatross" on active station. Just seems like they're making the listener miss out on some great stuff because of a CanCon curse. You could also argue that Canadian stations should be willing to play more American songs. Current pop with classic rock sounds pointless IMO. It's appealing to two entirely different audiences. A Hot AC in my hometown plays current pop, boy bands, and classic rock. The song transitions are jarring. What do you mean by "weird sounds"? ;D Number nine.....number nine....

What do you mean by "weird sounds"? ;D Just random sounds. For 2 hours. You could also argue that Canadian stations should be willing to play more American songs.. I disagree because I think they already do. They play their 35% CanCon, and the other 65% is stuff from the US charts (whether those bands be from the US or other countries) and some older stuff. It makes even me seem to dislike Canadian songs. Though I do like them musically, when making my playlist for each show, it's just like "ughhh...I've gotta play all this Canadian stuff." It's like a chore and a hassle to find 5 good songs each week.

I wish they'd play heavier stuff, a la A7X, All That Remains, Disturbed. Thankfully, my station's new request hour as shakened things up a bit and they will play a couple of those bands from time to time. It makes even me seem to dislike Canadian songs. Though I do like them musically, when making my playlist for each show, it's just like "ughhh...I've gotta play all this Canadian stuff." It's like a chore and a hassle to find 5 good songs each week. Dig deeper. I know tons of forgotten top 10 Canadian rock songs as far back as 2006. I have a strange memory for these types of things.

It makes me wonder if a lot of the staple recurrent bands from here don't get played as much up there (Metallica, Alice in Chains, Godsmack, Tool, etc.) I'm guessing they don't? And the one good thing about CanCon is that it forces you to notice bands like Metric, Finger Eleven and The Veer Union, all of whom are very underrated here in the US.

Proves how shitty OZ was. They played Whiskey In The Jar alot, and not much else by them. Maybe a song every 2 days. Great cover, but even so. Alice In Chains, I love them but honestly I don't remember hearing anything by them. Maybe Man In The Box very rarely. Never Godsmack or Tool. I'm also surprised by how bad Avenged Sevenfold and Disturbed do up here. So much worse, and they're great bands. My local one played neither. All That Remains doesn't get played anywhere up here, also sorta crazy (even though they're usually quite heavy). It's also weird how some American bands do way better here. "Cocaine Chest Pains" going #9 here on Active and only #25 on Billboard Mainstream, and "Pressure and Time" going #4 here on active on not charting in the US at all (that I know of). I don't know, I sort of think some stations are too specific. On my show, I would play anything that charts on any active/mainstream/modern/ chart as long as I like it. And I would listen to any station that did that. I don't mind hearing Slipknot after MGMT. But maybe there's not many like me.

All That Remains doesn't get played anywhere up here, also sorta crazy (even though they're usually quite heavy). All That Remains not getting played in Canada makes sense to me, since there are quite a few American stations that shy away from them. My station never adds their songs to regular daytime rotation. Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold not doing well up there is more surprising to me, since they regularly hit #1 here. It's also weird how some American bands do way better here. "Cocaine Chest Pains" going #9 here on Active and only #25 on Billboard Mainstream, and "Pressure and Time" going #4 here on active on not charting in the US at all (that I know of). Damn, I had forgotten all about "Cocaine Chest Pains" until I read this post. How the hell did that go top 10? I don't know, I sort of think some stations are too specific. On my show, I would play anything that charts on any active/mainstream/modern/ chart as long as I like it. And I would listen to any station that did that. I don't mind hearing Slipknot after MGMT. But maybe there's not many like me. I've always wanted to hear a station/show who was willing to try playing everything. Usually alt-leaning active stations shy away from playing anything too heavy (All That Remains, Slipknot, Drowning Pool, etc.) but also flat out avoid playing stuff that is too light/indie (Coldplay, Grouplove, MGMT). You end up getting limited to bands like the Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chevelle and others. Active-leaning alt stations might be a bit more enjoyable, but I have yet to see one embrace the whole spectrum.

Alice In Chains, I love them but honestly I don't remember hearing anything by them. Maybe Man In The Box very rarely. Never Godsmack or Tool. Overplayed may have not been the right word, but AIC has been played modestly. Not until Black Gives Way to Blue, mind you. Ever since my station replaced "AC/DC at 8" with "Mandatory Metallica" they've been playing the crap out of them. But it also means I get to hear some of their 80s material, which I don't mind at all. The rock station where I used to live (which is miles better than what I have now) played "Vicarious" and "The Pot" when they came out, and played "Cryin' Like a Bitch" in daytime rotation. Today I listened to them and they played "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" by Coldplay. I love their diversity. I'm also surprised by how bad Avenged Sevenfold and Disturbed do up here. So much worse, and they're great bands. My local one played neither. All That Remains doesn't get played anywhere up here, also sorta crazy (even though they're usually quite heavy). "The Waiting One" isn't that much of a stretch...is it? It's also weird how some American bands do way better here. "Cocaine Chest Pains" going #9 here on Active and only #25 on Billboard Mainstream, and "Pressure and Time" going #4 here on active on not charting in the US at all (that I know of). Ugh, I can't stand both those songs. It's stuff like this that makes me loathe Canadian rock radio. I don't know, I sort of think some stations are too specific. On my show, I would play anything that charts on any active/mainstream/modern/ chart as long as I like it. And I would listen to any station that did that. I don't mind hearing Slipknot after MGMT. But maybe there's not many like me. If you want "Slipknot meets MGMT", Live 105 in Halifax is occasionally like that. They play a bizarre amount of Christian Rock, but other than that they're quite good. If you want an Alt-leaning Active, try Mix 101, my old station. They're the only Active I know that played "Good Day at the Races".

Hahaha, Live 105 is actually the station I listen to. Still, I don't find them to go to heavy all that often. And their "request hour" if only about 50% requests. But, it's the best station I've found up here.
Geez Pipa, hard for me to imagine anyone hating both of those! But that's taste, after all.
And wow Mix's site is horrible LOL! I don't really like listening to Active, though...I don't like much classic rock at all.
