Alright, let's wrap this up!
10. Garbage - Blood for Poppies
The rock forum unamiously agrees that this was one of the best comebacks of 2012; unfortunately, radio didn't. I ignored this for the most part after its release, but it did spend 3 weeks at #1, and that's what earns its place at #10.
9. Slash - You're a Lie
The definition of a sleeper hit. At first I wasn't feeling it, but it became a song you could just crank up and rock out to. It spent one week at #1.
8. Royal Wood - Not Giving Up
The chorus that never leaves your brain. It's on the verge of being overly repetitive, but I love its classic sound. It was largely overlooked by the public, but it scored a #8 place on my year-end chart.
7. Linkin Park - Burn It Down
While some people may have been disappointed they didn't return to their original sound, I for one enjoy their more electronic approach. This song spent a week at #1 in June, and returned to #1 a month later, a feat that hasn't been seen since 2006's "Miss Murder" by AFI. It spent 4 weeks total on top.
6. Fun. feat. Janelle Monae - We Are Young
The only reason this isn't higher is because I didn't want two fun. songs in the top 5 (hint, hint). At first I thought the connection between the first lyric and chorus was weak, but it didn't last long as this kicked the year off at #1.
5. Kelly Clarkson - Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)
While the lyrics aren't the most inventive you'll ever hear, this has all the makings of the perfect pop hit. It spent 5 weeks at #1.
4. Ellie Goulding - Lights
I first heard this in February and thought, "this'll flop here just like it did in the UK". Thankfully, I was wrong. This entered the chart in June and spent 3 weeks at #1.
3. M83 - Midnight City
I originally listened to this last November and didn't get it at all. It wasn't until that strong new wave influence really clicked with me and this became a 3 week #1 hit.
2. Fun. - Some Nights
This ties with Kelly Clarkson for most weeks spent at #1. It spent 5 weeks on top (while being interrupted by Slash and Linkin Park inbetween, spent 5 months on the chart, and 4 months in the top 10. One of the most irresistable songs from one of the best new bands of the year. They're the first act to have their first 3 singles hit #1 on my chart.
1. Gotye feat. Kimbra - Somebody That I Used to Know
This song only spent 2 weeks at #1...but it was on my chart for 7 months! I loved it the instant I heard it. If you can steal "Baa Baa Black Sheep" with style, you have my respect. And the video is one of the most iconic ones made in recent years. Truly a masterpiece.
