It's that song from the Bing commercial!
The song is decent for what it is, but I personally am not really into it. It's now top 20 on alternative:
23 17 LUMINEERS Ho Hey 650 465 185

Bing? Oh my. Why let your song in an inferior product's commercial??
Anyway, thought it was pretty boring when I first heard it a few weeks ago. It grew on me since.

This is crossing over at the moment.
On Hot AC: 23 19 LUMINEERS Ho Hey 1361 896 465
On Pop: 28 24 LUMINEERS Ho Hey 2229 1659 570
I'm not surprised at all to see this crossing over. Hot AC especially has been on an alternative kick lately; Of Monsters And Men and Imagine Dragons are both in the top 20, not to mention the more poppy alt acts (Fun. and Alex Clare) in the top 5.

Pop radio has been a "sad occurrence" for most of its existence. But we can always remember the good times of 2006.

Y'know, I was just thinking, out of all the great songs that came out in 2006, why is "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies" one of the few golds Pop will still play? There are literally hundreds of songs from that time I'd rather hear before that one.

^Your guess is as good as mine, and I totally agree. I didn't really care for that song back then and I really don't now. I guess it's still considered "cool" with a lot of the teen crowd.

I Write Sins Not Tragedies is great...just decided to watch the video, and it has its original upload date of 2006. That's pretty cool since most stuff got taken down when Vevo started.
What else about pop was so great in 2006? Besides this, MakeDamnSure, and Welcome To The Black Parade.

Yeah, 2006 and 2007 were pretty much the height of Alternative playing lots of the same stuff as Active. A song like "Ho Hey" would not have fared well back then at all...completely different times, indeed.
As for the emo stuff from 2006, I was never really a fan in all honesty. I was a huge fan of Nickelback and was still a couple years away from getting into the heavier stuff.

I heard this on a top 40 station and it seemed so out of place. I'm not really a fan of it but good for them for getting a hit!

6 5 LUMINEERS Ho Hey 3782 3291 491
On Pop: 12 8 LUMINEERS Ho Hey 8552 6685 1867

I heard this on my pop station today. WTFFFFFFFFFF Let's be real, Some Nights and Somebody That I Used To Know and even Home were cute indie bops, but when I turn on Pop radio I want POP. If Im feeling indie, Ill listen to my Mumford and Sons and Beach House albums, thank you very much. When I'm turning on pop radio, I'm ready to be slayed by jams like Starships and Gangnam Style and Call Me Maybe. GET THIS GARBAGE OFF THE AIR

I feel like this alongside the "jams" adds variety and keeps Pop from becoming too Rhythmic. But balance is necessary too. Pop radio should be fun and upbeat without getting too serious, as these type of songs tend to be.

This is exactly why I don't listen to the radio even though I work in it.
The charts are a hot mess.

It's important to remember that "Pop" isn't the real name of the radio format; it's Top 40/Mainstream. There have been various times when actual pop music is a minority of the major hits on the format (1996 and 2004 are good examples of this). Don't be surprised if it happens again someday.
