Hysteria awaits One Direction on arrival in Australia
HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars in private security and extra NSW Police officers will be on hand from Tuesday for the moment when One Direction lands in Australia.
The manufactured boy-band brainchild of TV mogul Simon Cowell will touch down in Sydney to begin a five-day stay in the country.
An appearance in Martin Place on Wednesday morning is costing Channel 7 upwards of $15,000 in bulked-up security, with the cast and crew of Sunrise bracing for an onslaught of young fans, who have bombarded the network demanding information on the group's Sydney itinerary.
And a planned appearance by the group at a private Austereo event, originally slated for the radio network's Goulburn St headquarters, has been moved to a secret location, at a cost of thousands, due to security concerns.
It's understood the visit, held in the first week of NSW school holidays, has been deliberately shrouded in secrecy as security concerns for the five band members increases.
A rep for the band's label Sony Music yesterday refused to comment on security surrounding the visit, but a source working on one aspect of the visit said the heavily hyped group has sparked "hysteria" on a par with the Spice Girls phenomenon of the mid-'90s.
"It's like nothing we have ever dealt with before," said the source.
An Austereo spokesperson has urged fans and parents to exercise some "common sense" next week, as concerns increase for the safety of both the band and their fans.
The group will perform the first of their Australian shows at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion next Friday night before a second show on Saturday and, following that, an appearance at Sunday night's Logies Awards.

The American band posted a song, "2012," on YouTube, and it's been viewed more than 100,000 times. In addition, "2012" has been selling nicely on iTunes. Part of the success of One Direction's (U.S.) song could be attributed to consumers who stumbled on the song after searching for the more popular act. Ross also says that NBC's "Today Show" mistakenly played "2012" when introducing the hot UK act. Proving harm could be an entirely different issue in the coming case, though. The American group might be the beneficiary of attention they wouldn't have ordinarily have gotten -- for better or worse. On one hand, sales have been nice. On the other, some commentators on YouTube have left nasty comments, perhaps after seeing and hearing something they weren't expected. I find it so proposterous to buy tickets for a concert that is 15 months away in a week. But it makes sense, cash in now from your crazy ass fans and sell it out now because in a year, your second album could suck and your fans could desert you.
I mean, I'm getting tickets for the Chicago show, but that is simply besides the point.
