Michael Buble's "Crazy Love" gives the pop singer his second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with an opening frame of 132,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan . . . Buble's "Crazy" start was based on just three days of sales, as the set was pushed up to an off-cycle release on Friday, Oct. 9—the same day he appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" . . . Meanwhile, rock legend Kiss claims its highest-charting album as its Wal-Mart-exclusive "Sonic Boom" blasts in at No. 2 with 108,000 . . . In Progress Reports, we've got updates on Chris Young, 30 Seconds to Mars, David Guetta and Pet Shop Boys.
FLASH POINTS
• After only three days of sales, Michael Buble's "Crazy Love" opens atop the Billboard 200 with 132,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan, giving the pop singer his second No. 1 album.
• "Crazy" was pushed up from its original Oct. 13 street date to an off-cycle release on Friday, Oct. 9—likely to capitalize on Buble's chat and performance on that same day's "Oprah Winfrey Show." Because SoundScan's tracking week ends at the close of business on Sunday evening, Buble's opening frame is all the more handsome, since it only had three days of availability.
• Buble's last set, 2007's "Call Me Irresponsible," debuted with 212,000 at No. 2 before moving to No. 1 the following week. "Crazy" is the artist's third top 10 album, as his second studio set, "It's Time," debuted and peaked at No. 7 in 2005.
• Rock icon Kiss crashes in at No. 2 with its new Wal-Mart-exclusive studio album "Sonic Boom," selling 108,000 copies. It is the band's highest-charting album, and the 108,000 opener is the group's second-best sales week since SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. The act's previous chart high came with 1998's "Psycho-Circus," which debuted and peaked at No. 3 when it bowed with 110,000. That album's opening frame is also the group's best SoundScan sales week.
• Some industry prognosticators had projected the first-week sales figure for "Sonic Boom" to be much greater—as much as 180,000. However, those early forecasts were based on how well the set sold on its first day of release. As it turns out, as the week progressed, the album's sales tapered off sharper than expected, thus making the initial projections much too high.
• Meanwhile, country kingpin Toby Keith notches his 10th top 10 album on the Billboard 200 with "American Ride" driving in at No. 3 with 90,000. The set's arrival at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart also gives the artist his eighth topper on that list . . . Fellow country star Luke Bryan rolls in with "Doin' My Thing" at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on Top Country Albums, shifting 58,000.
• Pop group Backstreet Boys nets its seventh consecutive top 10 album on the Billboard 200—out of seven tries—with "This Is Us" starting at No. 9 with 42,000. The quartet's last effort, 2007's "Unbreakable," entered and peaked at No. 7 with 81,000.
• And now here's a look at the rest of the top 10: Last week's No. 1, Barbra Streisand's "Love Is the Answer," falls to No. 4 with 75,000 (down 58%) while Jay-Z's "The Blueprint 3" moves up one notch, to No. 5, with 65,000 (down 27%). Mariah Carey's "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" slips four spots to No. 7 with 54,000 (down 68%) while Miley Cyrus' "The Time of Our Lives" climbs three spots to No. 8 with 47,000 (down 14%). Rounding out the top 10 is Breaking Benjamin's "Dear Agony," which drops six places in its second week (41,000; down 69%).
• Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Oct. 11) totaled 6.3 million units, down 9% compared with the sum last week (6.9 million) and down 2% compared with the same sales week of 2008 (6.4 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 269.7 million, down 13% compared with the same total at this point last year (311.7 million).
MARKET WATCH
• Album units, current chart week: 6.3 million units
• DOWN 9% from last week's charts: 6.9 million units
• DOWN 2% from same week, 2008: 6.4 million units
• This week: The top two albums on the Billboard 200 and Top Comprehensive Albums sell more than 100,000 copies.
• This week last year on the Billboard 200: T.I. held on to the top slot with "Paper Trail" for a second week, selling 177,000 (down 69%) while the top debut came from Rise Against's "Appeal to Reason" at No. 3 with 65,000.
PROGRESS REPORTS
• Fourth-season "Nashville Star" winner Chris Young achieves his first No. 1 on Hot Country Songs, as "Gettin' You Home (The Black Dress Song)" dominates in its 35th chart week. That's the longest No. 1 climb since Tracy Lawrence's "Find Out Who Your Friends Are" needed 41 weeks to peak in June 2007. Lawrence's is the longest climb in the Nielsen BDS era (since January 1990), followed by Steve Holy's "Brand New Girlfriend" (36 weeks, September 2006) and Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" reached the summit in 35 weeks in November 2006.
• On the Alternative Songs chart, 30 Seconds to Mars charges in at No. 20 with its new single "Kings and Queens." It's the ninth song to bow in the top 20 this year on the chart and the previous eight have all peaked in the top five. "Kings" is the first single from the band's new Immortal/Virgin/Capitol album, "This Is War," due Dec. 8.
• After notching three No. 1s on the Hot Dance Airplay chart, superstar artist/producer David Guetta finally claims his first topper on the Hot Dance/Club Songs chart as "Sexy Chick" (featuring Akon) rises to the top this week . . . In other Club Songs news, Pet Shop Boys extend their record as the group with the most top 10 hits as "Did You See Me Coming?" vaults from No. 14 to No. 5.
A LOOK AHEAD
• Among the albums released this week, due on next week's charts: the soundtrack to "New Moon," Sugarland's "Gold and Green," David Archuleta's "Christmas From the Heart," Bob Dylan's "Christmas in the Heart," Five for Fighting's "Slice," the Flaming Lips' "Embryonic," Mario's "D.N.A." and Bowling for Soup's "Sorry for Partyin."
• Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2008 when: Kenny Chesney's "Lucky Old Sun" arrived at No. 1 with 176,000 while T.I.'s "Paper Trail" slipped to No. 2 with 132,000 (down 26%) after a two-week reign atop the list.
