Greetings, chartaholics! My week has been good. All my classes are over, but I have to go to the college sometime next week to pick up my research paper that I worked my ASS off on. Since the topic that I did is oh so dear to my heart as well, I really hope I got a good grade. Things are going well at home, things are going well with the boyfriend, everything seems to be going well for once in 2011. Not trying to sound emo or anything but January-April was not exactly an easy time for me. But hey, at least I'm not like Lady Gaga, who is extremely rich and famous for being a cheap knockoff of Madonna, whining about what a tough life I have. I heard she pulled that s**t on her HBO special and that is disgusting, especially in a day in age where so many people are out of work and the economy downright sucks. Okay sorry about that, this is a chart thread not a history lesson or a rant. Now STOP! JESSICA TIME! *cue Rick James – “Superfreak” sample*
OMG! A new #1 already?! Yup, it's true! After only one week at #1, Dave Grohl and those other dudes who were never in Nirvana drop one spot to #2 with “Rope”. But who got the #1 spot this week? Was it Nicole Whatever? Katy Perry? Def Leppard? The answer to all of those is… NO!
The new #1 on Jessica's Top 25 this week, climbing all the way from #7 last week, is Sixx:AM, Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx's side project, with their new single, “Lies Of The Beautiful People”. Their new album, This Is Gonna Hurt, debuted on the Billboard 200 this week at #10, which isn't bad at all. It's nice to see someone from Motley Crue not getting arrested for DUI or appearing on flop reality shows! ;D Also on the Billboard 200 chart this week, Adele spends her 500th week at #1 with 21, but I'm going to talk about her in a bit.
Aside from Sixx:AM's unexpected climb to #1, my top five seem to want to take baby steps. Nicole Whatever stays at #3 this week with “Don't Hold Your Breath”, David Corpserdale & the other Whitesnake dudes drop two spots from #3 to #5 with “Love Will Set You Free”, and Def Leppard move one spot from #5 to #4 with “Undefeated”. Speaking of Def Leppard, apparently they are releasing a lullabies CD devoted to their greatest hits, because, you know, every child wants to hear “Pour Some Sugar On Me” in lullaby form!
We have two top ten entries this week, and it should come as no surprise whatsoever that one of them comes from Geddy, Alex, & Neil themselves – Rush have this week's greatest gainer who went from #19 last week all the way to #8 this week with "BU2B". Also, Jennifer Lopez and nobody else climbs two spots this week from #12 to #10 with “I'm Into You”. I'm sorry but I cannot STAND Lil' Wayne and I believe his part of the song was unnecessary. I didn't cut out his part in my MP3 though or anything like that; I don't think I've done that since I think “It's Like That” by Mariah Carey came out.
As you can see here, Rihanna the Christmas Tree drops one spot from #15 to #16 with “California King Bed”. Why might you ask she dropped a spot? Simple. She's being an Evans Blue about her next single. For those who don't remember back in 2007, alternative rock band Evans Blue had a HUGE #1 hit on my chart with “The Pursuit”, which was the lead single from their second album, The Pursuit Begins When This Portrayal Whatever. You look up the entire title yourself on Amazon. The second single was rumored to be “In A Sugababes And Heart”, I mean, “In A Red Dress And Alone”, which also ended up being a #1 on my chart. One of my weaker #1's in my opinion, but meh. Then all of a sudden right after it goes to #1 on my chart they change the second single to “Q (The Best One Of Our Lives)”, which ended up peaking at #10, and THEN right after that they change the second single to “Shine Your Cadillac”, and by that time I got so fed up with Evans Blue and their three second singles that it peaked at #9 and only spent eight weeks on the chart. Now, what does this Evans Blue rant have to do with Rihanna? Well, the Christmas Tree keeps flip flopping as to what her next single will be. First I hear it's CKB, then I hear that this is being released internationally and “Man Down”, which I hate, is being released here, then I heard about CKB being released here again, and now I'm just so confused that I don't really care anymore. No song is worth all that trouble to me, especially from an artist who I felt has gone extremely downhill this past year. Don't get me wrong, I still like the song. It's just annoying when artists are so indecisive with their single choices. So unless she makes up her mind, “California King Bed” is now “California Flop Bed”.
Some notable climbs on this week's chart include Ozzy Osbourne rising from #10 to #7 with “Let It Die”, Within Temptation climbing from #23 to #18 with “Where Is The Edge”, and Katy Perry climbing from #24 to #21 with “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”
We have three debuts on the chart this week, and the top debut comes from former Guns ‘N' Roses and Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan and his side project, Duff McKagan's Loaded, with their new single, “Dead Skin”, debuting at #22. Also debuting this week are Halestorm's cover of the 1991 Skid Row classic, “Slave To The Grind” at #23, as well as Adele's monster hit, “Rolling In The Deep” at #24, from her album 21, which is the amount of weeks she has been #1 on the Billboard 200. On a more serious note though, I'm not the biggest Adele fan in the world but that's not a bad song at all. It's also nice to see someone who isn't 80 pounds and doesn't whore out the auto-tune doing so well on the charts.
Now, before I wrap up the commentary, as some of you may know, this Monday marks the one-year anniversary of the passing of heavy metal legend Ronnie James Dio, who has fronted bands such as Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Elf, and of course his own band Dio. Dio passed away at the age of 67 due to stomach cancer. I would like to not only dedicate this week's chart to Ronnie James Dio, but also I'd like to share with you guys something that I wrote on the night of May 15th, 2010 when there were rumors floating around Twitter that he passed away, to show you guys how much of an influence his music has had on not only myself, but many other people around the world.
Ronnie James Dio - one of the most amazing, talented, classiest, and most legendary people in music. I will never forget the day I was first introduced to him. It was one Saturday afternoon in October 2007, I was watching Metal Mania and the video for "Rainbow In The Dark" came on, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever and I immediately put it on my iPod after that and listened to it A LOT that week. Then after that I heard more of his music with Dio, Black Sabbath, and Rainbow and loved every single song. Even some of my absolute favorite artists have at least ONE song from them I dislike. I have yet to hear a song of his that I haven't liked. Every single song of his I've heard, whether with Dio or Sabbath or Rainbow, has been amazing. I also remember last year being SO excited for the Heaven And Hell album, and especially the night of March 20th, 2009, when Eddie Trunk premiered "Bible Black" on his Friday Night Rocks show. I remember hearing that song for the first time that night and being speechless at it's amazingness. The next day I was listening to the song nonstop; that song as of now has 102 plays on my iPod. Then I got the album the day it came out on April 28th, 2009 at Best Buy and even got the awesome bonus DVD with a 21 minute video of them working on the album. I know I have only recently became a fan of his, but over this time he has grown to become one of my all-time favorite musicians. Tonight there has been a rumor floating around various places on the internet, most notably Twitter, that he has lost his battle to stomach cancer. I am hoping this is false and some heartless lowlife just started this rumor to be a jerk, but if it is true, thanks for the awesome music and memories. R.I.P. (July 10th, 1942 - May 16th, 2010)
UPDATE: Blabbermouth.net have confirmed that at about 7:45 A.M. this morning, Ronnie James Dio passed away. I am completely saddened and speechless by this news. My condolences go out to his family and friends, and once again, thanks Dio for all the phenomenal music.
Will Sixx:AM spend a second week at #1? Will Nicole Whatever stop holding her breath and finally get to #1? Will Def Leppard prove how “undefeated” they are and take #1 instead? Stay tuned next week on another edition of the Jessica's Top 25 countdown!
