So it seems like there seems to be debate if Katy Perry has sold out or not. When she first arrived, she was seen as the most rock female in mainstream music in a long time. I Kissed A Girl went Top 25 on Alternative with Waking Up in Vegas getting Alternative play also, her album charted on the Billboard Rock chart, and she played the Warped Tour. But now it seems like she has given up her on her rock past and tried to become the next dance diva. California Gurls could have been a song sung by Britney Spears, while Peacock sees her aiming for Ke$ha (or Britney according to Derek ) territory. She even clings onto Ciara leftovers with Who Am I Living For? It seems like this move was carefully coordinated and was no accident But does that mean she sold out? Or does she have to do what she needs to survive in a dance-filled market of today? The article says they didn't want to stray away from her alternative roots, but it seems like they have with the possible exception of Hummingbird Heartbeat

I don't really hear that much of a difference honestly from the bits I have heard, granted I haven't listened to the whole album just the iTunes releases but it doesn't sound like she changed at all. California Gurls is a lot more commercial but it's not really that much of a separate entity from her works before. I don't think it's a sell out because it just more of the same just with a bit sharper and more involved production from her producers.

I don't think she's sold out. Now if we're gonna talk about sell outs, let's bring in Lady Gaga...

But Gaga was something different. I saw this article a while back and it sums up how i Feel:

which in essence exposes Gaga for a fake really rather than a sell-out I guess.

Think her producers wanted her to fit in with the electro-sounding pop trend (which I really hate) Don't think it's selling out to sound more pop - it's just switchin up your style

But Christian to Pop isn't a HUGE transition. It's not like a 180 turn around. But Gaga was something different. I saw this article a while back and it sums up how i Feel: Wait, are you considering what Katy did when she was doing rock stuff as "pop" or her her dance stuff as "pop"? If you meant her going from Christian to Rock, isn't that the biggest transition of them all? To go from a nice Christian girl to a flashy rocker who sang about kissing girls? And if you mean her entire transition going from Christian to Rock to Dance, the same applies. She went from being a nice Christian girl who sang about worshiping God to being a foul mouthed dance diva who now worships peacocks If you call Gaga going from Rock to Dance a fake, isn't that exactly what Katy is doing right now? The article leaves a lot too. It doesn't mention the part about how Gaga did grow musically from her time spent with Lady Starlight to appreciate dance music and open her mind. So Gaga did go from rock to dance, but she did it organically. And Gaga hasn't downplayed her rock influences with her still doing songs like Speechless and You and I. And she's mentioned that a lot of times when she writes song she sometimes conceptualizes them as rock songs (which could explain why a lot of her songs work as rock covers) So basically since Gaga discovered who she was, she hasn't changed that. Unlike, Katy who started off Christian, then discovered her calling was rock, but then suddenly changed now into dance, because her people coordinated a change for her to fit into radio.

Ahhh - now I get it - unless she just wanted to go electropop for the experience - but if she did it for $$$ then yeah she's a sellout

I don't think so. If anything, she sold out going from Christian to rock. In regaurds from last album to this, I would say she's evolving. Although, it would have been nice if this album was a little more harder. Kelly now seems to be the rockiest out of all the divas.

I look at it a little differently. I think of Lady GaGa as a performer. I think of her as an actor who was asked to portray an dance pop artist. And her own talent is what pushed her not only to play an extremely convincing role, but to even become the innovator of electropop music.
And Katy Perry never sold out. Maybe she doesn't have that indie cred anymore. But I can't think of a more fitting progression from "I Kissed a Girl" than "California Girls".

I would say no. Her music may have changed somewhat, but her image is still the same.
