I saw this topic at Pulse and thought it woudl be interested to talk about. There was an article from about a month ago, basically just saying how retailers are continuing to lower their CD space in their stores for more DVD space.
I've definitely seen this around me. My Walmart has continually adding more and more DVD space its almost like the entertainment section should just be re-branded "DVDs" because everytime I go there there's a new section of DVD's. The CD section gets smaller and smaller, basically the Pop/Rock/Rap/Soundtracks are all within one small aisle on both sides. I have noticed that they are lowering SOME prices, as evident as I foudn Panic at the Disco's Pretty Odd for $5 the other day (as well as JLO and Christina's first albums for $5) and even BEP and Kelly Clarkson's recent albums are down to $10. But some of the albums are still like $12.88, $13.88 even for regular versions.
My Target has really reduced the CD space as well. They were doing a remodel not that long ago and the CDs were temporarily in a different section and there was like 2 good aisles of CDs on both sides, and now that they put them where they officially were to go, the pop/rock section is a paltry one little aisle (on one side) and the other side is Rap/Country etc. And their prices are even worse
Best Buy is really the only decent place to go to find an older one or an obscurer one but even they still have many prices at $12-13. Some older ones are $7.99-9.99 but its not good enough.
The stores have a right to lower the space because obviously stuff isn't selling but at these prices, do they really expect them to sell? There really needs to be an industry-wide lowering of CD prices. And not just a dollar or so but a significant change. I feel like it would make a world of difference.
It's just sad that they are getting even more extinct these days and some stores like K-Mart (the ones that are still even around ) don't even sell them anymore The one near me closed about a year ago and when I went in there a bit before they annoucned the closing, I noticed that the entire CD section was just gone. All DVDs
