  American Idol David Cook, Runner-Up David Archuleta Dominate Billboard Downloads Chart He's been the nation's seventh American Idol for less than a week, but David Cook is already proving that, when it comes to marketable, bankable artists, he certainly fits the bill. "The Time of My Life," the coronation song that Cook belted out at the close of last week's "Idol" finale, opens at #1 on next week's Billboard Hot Digital Tracks chart, which ranks the best-selling digital singles nationwide. With 236,000-plus downloads, Cook bumps Rihanna's "Take a Bow" from the top spot — but that's not all.All told, 17 of the songs the 25-year-old Missouri guitarist performed during the show's most recent season are sprinkled throughout the list, according to the latest SoundScan figures. Cook's "Dream Big" follows at #7 (with 111,000 downloads), while his rendition of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" from the season's final performance episode occupies the #9 position, having generated 97,900 downloads. At #14, with 80,000 downloads, it's Cook's cover of Collective Soul's "The World I Know," while his take on Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" was downloaded 60,000 times, earning it the chart's #18 spot.
Likewise, Cook's version of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" comes in at #21 (with 56,300 sold), his rendition of Mariah Carey's "Always Be My Baby" follows at #27 (46,600), and his performance of Lionel Richie's "Hello" occupies the #30 slot (42,300).For being this year's "Idol" runner-up, David Archuleta isn't doing so bad himself. While he failed to inspire the sort of download action that Cook has, his take on Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" was the country's 23rd-most downloaded song, with sales of nearly 50,700. Two spots behind that, with 49,100 downloads, is his first single, "In This Moment," followed at #36 by his cover of John Lennon's "Imagine," which generated close to 40,000 downloads. Archuleta has 11 other songs on next week's download chart.

Season seven "American Idol" champion David Cook will set a record for debut entries on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Digital Songs tomorrow as 11 titles enter the former, while 14 songs jump on the download tally. The onslaught is led by a No. 3 Hot 100 start for his original recording "The Time of My Life," which shifts 236,000 downloads to easily take the No. 1 spot on Hot Digital Songs.
"Idol" runner-up David Archuleta lands three songs on both charts, led by his cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" (No. 36 Hot 100, No. 16 on Hot Digital Songs, 71,000).
Cook's takeover of the Hot 100 shatters the mark for debuts set by Miley Cyrus (as Hannah Montana) in the Nov. 11, 2006, issue, when she placed six new titles on the list. The 11 songs on the chart are the most in a week by any artist in the Nielsen Music era, which began in December 1991 when the chart converted to Nielsen BDS and Nielsen SoundScan data.
His haul also marks the most placements on the list since the Beatles charted 14 songs on the Hot 100 in the week of April 11, 1964.
The 14 tracks on Hot Digital Songs also gives Cook a record for debuts and total songs on that three-year-old chart, besting Hannah Montana's total output (8) on the Nov. 11, 2006 chart, and Bon Jovi's six debuts in the May 19, 2007, issue.
This is the first week of the 2008 season that "American Idol" downloads counted toward Billboard's charts. In cooperation with the show's producers, Apple withheld reporting iTunes sales of those songs until the week of the final episode.
Cook's debut album for 19 Recordings/RCA is due in the fall.

Even though I'm not a HUGE fan of him, I am glad he won. He may not be original like the judges claim, but he's going to bring in sales and right now American Idol NEEDS to have a big named act come out again. Like the winner, not a 4th place contestant. LOL! With Jordin being a hit and now David Cook probably being huge too, and maybe even David Archuleta, American Idol could get back on as a credible show instead of a joke producing flop artists. LOL!

I agree. Hes not original but he knows what styles suit him just like P!nk (for example) does and thats a really good quality to have in an artist. Plus he plays guitar, and has charisma so hes definitely a good artist to sign. |

Yeah. He isn't so bad. lol I was just getting annoyed with reading all this praise of him being original and what not. lol I am sure you would be annoyed if Nickleback was being praised as an "original and innovative act". LOL!

Oh definitely. I think they were just using the wrong word.
Cause he isnt original cause he used other peoples versions of songs but he definitely has an ear for good music/versions and knows what suits him, so if they meant that I agree but if not, I dont. haha

i loved loved love(still do) always be my baby...so much better than mimis crap AMEN!!!  "Always Be My Baby" is in my top 3 performances from the season and tied for first from him with "Billie Jean". those are just awesome. Brooke White's "Let It Be" also is in my top 3. i loved Brooke the most this season, and then Kristy, then David C, then David A so i am happy with how things turned out. i wish Brooke and Kristy would have made it farther than stupid Jason Castro though  he is so  anyways, they will be successful and he will not.  as for this song, i didn't like it a lot at first but now i am starting to LOVE this!!! it is becoming one of my favorite coronation singles. as much as i love Carrie, "Inside Your Heaven" sucks and is the second worst next to Ruben's song. i also love Jordin but "This is My Now" is horrendous too. "A Moment Like This" is by far the best single from Idol. "Do I Make You Proud" and "I Believe" were good too (even if i didn't like the winners that season). but this one is growing on me every time i listen to it  |
