So with Mariah looking likely to top Elvis in number ones next week, and a huge media frenzy over her beating him and the Beatles, it got me thinking about the greatest music icons ever, who have made a huge impact on musical culture, and if Mariah will ever be classed as one of them, with all the records she is breaking. So who do you think are the greatest musical icons ever?

In a general sense, definitely the first four. Not sure about Britney. She's iconic, but moreso for the gossip. LOL

Michael Jackson Elvis The Beatles Madonna Eminem
Those are the only few I think that will still stand the test of time and continue to influence, musically and in pop culture, long after they're over.

I personally hate Elvis and The Beatles but they did what they did. Eminem is really a nobody right now and only a few years have passed since his last album so I couldn't consider him an icon just because he won't be remember 50 years from now.
Without a doubt Madonna and Michael Jackson are and will be the biggest thing in music. After them, and will depend on her next moves, goes Britney. Some of her videos, songs, performances, and just herself have had a huge impact in current artists and will have for years to come.

I just feel like Eminem should be considered because he's really the only worldwide rap STAR. Like 50 Cent gets close, but has no where near Em's popularity outside the US (even in the US now lol). And he's pretty much already considered a legend by the rap community, kinda sets him up for icon status, IMO.

If we expanded the list definitely, but like Top 5? I don't know.

Even though I am not a HUGE fan of her, I would say Mariah has been. Look at the style of R&B she sang and the structure of how it was sung. People have begun to copy that a lot. I would say there are 2 different kinds of icons, vocal icons & image icons...
Vocal Icons: Mariah Whitney Aretha
Image Icons: Elvis Britney Madonna Beyonce
just to name a few...

LOL. I didn't specify. I thought we were going by a stricter definition since you replied first and it was like the other 4 were at a certain level and then there was Britney.

Well, I also think Icon's come and go. Like it all depends on what era you are from and in at the moment. For instance, back in 2000 & 2001, Britney was probably THE biggest musical icon. But like I said, things change.

To me, icon is more of a longevity thing. Not someone who may have had some early great impact (like Hootie and The Blowfish), but then slowed down.

I didn't disagree on that LOL! LOL! I know. Do you agree on what I said though about the vocal icon thing? Cause honestly, people like Whitney & Aretha aren't really ICONS, as far as overall goes, but females are ALWAYS naming them as their influences.

I I would definitely consider Aretha a full fledged icon. Besides being a female vocal influence, she's definitely one of the biggest influences in R&B and Soul ever (Hence, "Queen of Soul")
I think Whitney is an icon too. She kind of lost some ground in the last few years, but not enough to totally strip her of being one.
If I had to think of someone who is more of a vocal icon only, maybe I would think of someone more like Celine Dion

Yeah, I guess thats true too for the most part. I agree on Aretha, but I'm not sure about Whitney. lol I just hear people citing her as a vocal & musical style influence. But like I said, there is kind of a difference, someone like Madonna would influence people more for her image and everything. She hasn't ever really had a defined sound or style, and she isn't the best vocalist either. lol

I'd definitely agree on Elvis, the Beatles, Michael Jackson and Madonna.
The 5th spot is up for grabs though. I'd be tempted to go with someone like U2 for that one.

I think that of this decade, Britney Spears is hands down the greatest musical icon. While lately its moreso she is a fabulous tabloid seller, when she started, she was IT. Look at the ripoffs spawned because of her - Christina, Jessica, Mandy... I would also like to add some country people to the list. They might not be huge icons mainstream (well Shania is), but I think that are icons in their own right: Shania Twain Garth Brooks George Strait Dolly Parton Reba

The influence Whitney has had even now that she's a crackwhore is indeniable. Her songs are still being sung in Idol and anyone can name you easily 5 of her songs. That's an icon. Mariah and Madonna well duh lol. As I said, Britney has the songs, videos, and performances that will be remembered years from now so she must be at the list, even if its at the very bottoom.
