I would agree if Madonna had bombed on her last album. But bottom line is that for an album that is 100% DANCE music and the fact that she only did one performance to promote the album makes it a HUGE hit in more ways than one. She's trying to stay relevant and someone as old as Madonna that is not selling out at all.

They sold out. They both wanted hits and they got them.
If "Folklore" had been a hit, Nelly would NOT have gone to Timbaland. She wanted a more hiphop sound because that's what's in.
Who cares. Nelly sucks and Madonna is beyond annoying right now.

We're not, but in all likelihood, it probably would not have happened.

What makes you think that though? Just because Folklore failed? People like to change their styles. I can't say it wouldn't have happened, but I can't say it would have either cause honestly, WE AREN'T NELLY, we don't know. lol She worked with Timbo in the past and if you listen to Folklore a lot of the songs have a urban/hip-hop tone to them.

I know about her urban influences, but those weren't mainstream styled urban influences. Going from songs like that to something like Promiscuous was definitely a change. Just like Liz Phair went from Indie Rock to something Pop Rock like Why Can't I. Same genre, but the key is the mainstream part

So what if she went mainstream? lol When times change there can be a fine line between mainstream and non-mainstream. There was like a 3-year gap between Loose & Folklore. Music changes. Some of the songs on Folklore could be big Hot AC hits and possibly even Pop hits now, where as back when the album was released they wouldn't have been. She had several mainstream songs on Folklore, they just never got released.

But what he is saying is ignorant and stupid. Artists shouldn't live in a f**kin bubble!

But what he is saying is ignorant and stupid. Artists shouldn't live in a f***in bubble! UGH! What's ignorant and stupid about that? I didn't say she had to live in a bubble of one genre. That's not the discussion, the discussion is whether or not she sold out. And again, like I said before, its not a bad thing. What would you rather have? Nelly on the Surreal Life or Nelly's career renewed like it is now?

I don't hear any urban styled songs that would work on pop or rhythmic now or then.

I know, but what is she selling out from? Who is to say she didn't want to do this kind of an album regardless of its sound? And Timbo wasn't even "HOT" when she worked with him. And saying something like "those songs weren't mainstream and these songs are" when referring to selling out is kind of ignorant because there can be a FINE line between Mainstream and Non-Mainstream. And its not like she wasn't ever mainstream before. She is a singer and an artist, if she wanted to make one album that wasn't so mainstream thats HER choice, but to label her a sellout for going back to mainstream music is stupid.

Atleast some of the songs do anyways. I was mainly talking about how what is considered mainstream changes.

What makes someone a sell-out is when I become a big fan of them.

I know, but what is she selling out from? Who is to say she didn't want to do this kind of an album regardless of its sound? . Again, we're talking likelihood. Then you can't call Jewel a sellout either then. Maybe it was natural for her to go commercial too. People forget that Nelly worked with a lot of hip hop producers like The Neptunes and Scott Storch, but that those tracks didn't make the cut. It wasn't like she was trying to be some "artiste" going for the unknown with Timbaland only. Where the heck are you coming up with this FINE line between mainstream and non mainstream thing? Like I just said, none of the "urban" styled songs would have worked on rhythmic or pop now or then. If anything is ignorant, it's to think they would work. AGAIN, I didn't say there was anything wrong with her going back to the mainstream. That is her choice, and I like I've said countless times, I think it was a GOOD move.

I was mainly talking about how what is considered mainstream changes. Right, but with Nelly the main thing up for her debate is the urban part. I don't think there's any room to debate her HAC material then or now The line between mainstream urban styled music can change, but like I said, I don't think think anything "urban" there would have worked now or then.

A sell-out is someone that whores themself to a company for a large profit. ie: Endorsements, etc
Or IMO if someone is one type of artist and says that theyll never do something and then does it cause its popular or wants to gain something, thats a sell-out imo.

Exactly! I don't think a sell-out is someone who just changes genre's or goes mainstream. That is just a stupid excuse.
