and also cuz it was in the pop section. this is an r&b track i would agree that closer and maybe even miss independent were pop tracks but this is very R&B...

I think it's the other way around.
Closer is actually very funky and soulful. The only thing "pop" about it is that beat. And if you listen to the end, an urban beat comes on at the end and fits in much better. It's basically a normal Ne-Yo R&B song with a different kind of beat changed very arbitrarily.
Mad is more of a pop ballad. It has some modern urban elements, but they're very toned down, and the chords progressions and melody are very pop.
