Yeah, I'd agree. Honestly, I think country acts are trying to fuse overproduction and elements of pop music with traditional country music. And it doesn't work. Because even with the overtly country songs (Beer On The Table, A Little More Country Than That, Whistlin' Dixie, etc.), you can still hear plenty of pop-based elements. I was just listening to a bunch of 90's country, and to go over this list is kind of depressing. When people ask if I'm still obsessed with country music (LOL...), I can honestly tell them it's no longer my favorite genre.

Same here. I mean, I absolutely LOVE Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum, Sugarland, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, the non-beach version of Kenny Chesney, Dierks Bentley, Love and Theft, Gloriana, Keith Urban, Eric Church, Kellie Pickler, Jason Aldean, etc. but really, they all could easily crossover to Pop with some of their songs.
Songs like Hillbilly Bone, That's How Country Boys Roll, Eight Second Ride, Backwoods, Rain Is A Good Thing all take country lyrics and are putting them with a country/pop elements and they are atrocious. This is what Toby Keith has done for years, and I HATE it (usually)! It is really sad, because I used to love Country music.
It is really apparent how much my love for it has changed when looking at my personal chart. I used to have over 50% of my top 100 as Country songs. Now I have 15 Country songs. That tells you the lack of good songs in the last few months. And those 15 include 2 Lady Antebellum songs, 2 Carrie Underwood songs, 1 Taylor Swift song, Love and Theft song, Brad Paisley song, Rascal Flatts song, which leaves Bomshel, Jaron & The Long Road To Love, Jerrod Niemann, Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, David Nail, and Carter's Chord. Few of those would have no chance at a crossover hit.
I really hope Country turns back to the era of Keith Urban's "Be Here", Kenny Chesney's "When The Sun Goes Down", and Rascal Flatts' "Feels Like Today" or turns to sounding like Carrie, Taylor, Lady A and the other crossover acts.

A lot of country acts are getting pop play now due a lot in part to Taylor Swift. It seems like every few years, there is a big artist on pop from country, but Taylor just shattered everything and begun to outshine regular pop/rap/rock artists.
Other country acts are going to try now more than ever to make it like Taylor. The labels probably are going to push it even more and more because at the end of the day, they want MONEY. and getting the pop/country sound like Taylor is how to achieve that goal.

Well typically I only like about 10 songs at a time in country music which at least 1 or 2 include a carrie underwood or taylor swift song so go figure.

I would argue, but it would be pointless since you most likely have not heard 1/10 of the songs on the chart. But just to clarify, there is no way in hell most of these songs could crossover to mainstream, and most likely the artists and their record labels aren't aiming for that. A lot of the country songs and taking pop music elements, mixing them with fiddles and banjos and then adding lyrics like "I'M A COUNTRY BOY" "LOOK I'M A HILLBILLY" "LET ME DRINK THIS AND THAT... OOPS! I'M DRUNK!" "WANNA TAKE A RIDE IN MY BIG TRUCK" and "I'M A FARMER! YEE HAW!" country lyrics like that, 9 times out of 10 make me despise songs like that. and this is what the majority of country music has turned into lately. songs about beer, trucks, farming, and 'being country'. none of which appeal to me

they do. all those themes pretty much do, but i hate traditional country music (Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, etc.) so that doesn't mean much.

Sorry if it seems like I never post in country anymore, Zack. I will try to change that. I know in 2008 I posted here often.
I'd say that country has sucked lately because things are mostly pop-country (like Taylor Swift and Brad Paisley) or watered-down veteran artists (like Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw, who have been boring the hell out me lately). I guess I'm different than you, because thouse beer & trucks songs are usually my faves. ;D

the country pop (Taylor & Brad) is the few glimpses of hope Country has left (imo) and i agree that veterans like Kenny, Tim, and Toby have been super sucky lately and that needs to end now. I REALLY miss the old Kenny Chesney. "When The Sun Goes Down" and "The Road And The Radio" were phenomenal albums! even "Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates" was a good album (sans "Shiftwork" and a few others)... but "Lucky Old Sun" is awful (other than "I'm Alive" and "Way Down Here" and maybe "Down The Road")

the country pop (Taylor & Brad) is the few glimpses of hope Country has left (imo) I think it works for the younger generation. Country pop is better than no country at all I suppose, and I don't think many 15 year olds will be open to liking the stuff they might have liked in 1995 or something. and i agree that veterans like Kenny, Tim, and Toby have been super sucky lately and that needs to end now. He was strong his whole career until recently, with his new beachy sound and weak hits such as "Out Last Night". I thought "Down the Road" was boring but okay. And Tim McGraw hasn't really released an album with a good strand of singles since the late 90s imo.

To be honest I'm not a big country fan.
My local station KHCM is actually satellite from Dial Global Mainstream Country. KTOH Kauai uses the same Dial Global feed. On the Big Island its KKOA also satellite from Citadel Media Mainstream Country. KDLX Makawao dropped country in December after some 16 years, changed to AC.
The four stations mentioned all seem(ed) to play a lot of old stuff. For me personally since I'm a CHR fan, do country stations exist where the focus is on today's music with older stuff going back maybe 10 years and perhaps playing the occasional classic?

That's how both of mine are. Mine are WMZQ (Washington, DC) and WFRE (Frederick). They play the big-time artists of today (such as Kenny, Taylor Swift and Brad Paisley) all the time, and commonly play recurrents from throughout the 90's and 00's. Every once in awhile, they'll throw on a classic.

Ive actually liked Kenny's Down the Road and Im alive, so to me lately he has improved. those were pretty good, (way better than "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven", "Shiftwork", etc.) but compared to hits from WTSGD and TRATR and even JWIA:P&P, like "I Go Back", "There Goes My Life", "The Woman With You", "You Save Me" (my favorite Chesney song), "Summertime", "Don't Blink" and "Never Wanted Nothing More"... they just aren't that good. I miss that kind of Kenny Chesney

His stuff before his Greatest Hits was pretty good too. "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy", "She's Got It All", "I Lost It", "How Forever Feels" are really good too. And I completely forgot about his "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem" album! "The Good Stuff" is tied with "You Save Me" as my favorite song from him. "Young" is also great and "Big Star" is alright too

I love all of those songs! "How Forever Feels" and "Big Star" are also some of my favorites of his. And "Young" seems like an anthem for older people, but I still turn it up anyway. Do you like his song "Who You'd Be Today"? I think it was from TRATR but I'm not sure.

Yes, it was on "The Road And The Radio". I like the song, it's not one of my favorites of his, but I would take that in a heartbeat over any of his singles in the past year and a half.

I think it is mostly about country music changing. Yes, I am liking more hip-hop, rock, pop lately but I still love some country music. The few country songs on my top 40 that aren't Carrie/Taylor (like Carter's Chord, Jaron & The Long Road To Love, Jerrod Niemann) are all VERY country artists.
But the big thing that I think is going wrong is Country music is becoming a stereotype of songs about the themes i previously stated. They are all about "being country". And "being country" apparently means you have to drive a truck with a hot woman in the front seat, drink beer all night, and be a farmer. Those are the kinds of songs I don't like because I CANNOT RELATE TO THOSE!
To me, country music is about telling stories. I am a sucker for a good, sad country ballad. That is the kind of country music I love.
