I posted this 'brief' comment on Pulse, I'll share it here too:
I just saw Alicia's and Carrie's performances...
After that, I can share my humble opinions of this year's show:
BEST MOMENTS:
1) Amy Winehouse... seeing her seeing with her weird dance moves (shaky legs, crucified arm, shaky hand), intense look, wedding-cake hairdo, but goooood vocals... plus her touching moment almost crying when hearing she won, her weird speech not knowing what to say (asking mom for advice), mentioning Blake and chaning her tone of voice from a retarded 'UH!' to a wild-drunk/hi YEAH! was priceless
2) The duet of pianists was also great! The Asian one was fantastic!
NICE SURPRISES:
1) Carrie Underwood singing BHC was good! First of all, she has grown A LOT in terms of stage dominion. I remember her last year, not knowing what to do with the mic, turning hands to grab it, and with an old-lady dress... to that FIERCE black dress that looked so HOT on her, and that impro for the last 15 seconds was great!! Congrats!!
2) Fergie! Another girl that has grown a lot in terms of performance. I still remember one of her sad award renditions of Fergalicious where she barely moved and sang. Disastrous. But today she was elegant, charming, comfortable with the mic and actually singing VERY WELL!!! Great voice for tonight.
BAD DISAPPOINTMENTS:
1) Rihanna. It is not that she did it badly... but after so many years in the business and many performances (more chances than Fergie at least), it's hard for me to think she has not had time to actually improve.... oh, well, I'll try not to be too hard on her, because I like her, but well I can't believe she is from the Caribbean and CANNOT LEARN HOW TO DANCE. She sang well Umbrella and was fresh and natural. Good. But for DSTM I was expecting more from her, but:
- she barely danced... mostly walked and shook her hands in the air,
- and she could not sing the whole song!!!! she let the background vocals to finish the phrases of the chorus!!! I mean, I would forgive her if she were actually dancing, but if she is not dancing, at least SING the whole song!! NO, NO!! She's not a newbie anymore, and if she decided to go for the dance root, she should be able to pull a better performance IMO.
2) Alicia Keys. I know she is great... but:
- She did not sing No One as in other performances... she was focused on being more edgy, energetic, looking younger (which she did: HOT!), but her voice was weak, raspy, not good on that song. John Mayer did a good pair with her, even with his limitations.
- Now that I found it out, I HATE her piano.... If people accuse of lip-synching... I would accuse her of hand-synching!! I saw the opening performance, and I invite EVERYONE to see that AGAIN and pay attention to her hands over the piano. They are not moving with the sound of the piano of the song !! she is trying to appear as if she is actually playing something but she is NOT! And then, in No One, there is a keyboard put there in the middle of stage, besides the one where she started singing... what for?? So she can put one or 2 fingers twice and hand-synch!! Too much of that
WORST MOMENTS:
1) Will.I.Am
That was the worst Rap I have ever heard from the Professor (WTF was that mention?!)
2) Aretha's Tribute
And not only because of that huge-banana-peeled dress of her showing her celullitic arm (who advised these divas on her wardrobes?!), but because of all the Hallelujah! GLoria! Jesus! WOoaaHHHhhh!! Yeyeyayeaahayaya!!!! Etc, with like tons of unknown singers with different styles singing like people attending service... Too much for my ears....
